Job description

As an agronomist, you will be on the frontlines of delivering tangible impact to smallholder farmers in our project regions. Your role is to support the adoption of regenerative, sustainable agricultural practices that improve soil health, increase yields, and contribute to ecosystem restoration.

You’ll work closely with farmers in the field—offering technical advice, delivering hands-on training, and guiding them through certification processes. You will also play a key role in ensuring that agronomic activities are aligned with project goals and global standards for environmental integrity.

In this role you will;

  • Take a leading roll in implementing agroforestry and regenerative agriculture systems.
  • Assess soil, climate and vegetation to guide planting techniques and soil fertility management.
  • Monitor seedling quality and field planting to ensure high survival rates of forestry trees, cocoa and coffee.
  • Carry out surveillance for pests and diseases to support early detection and effective management.
  • Monitor and evaluate survival rates, yields and soil health.
  • Collect and report field data as required.
  • Take lead in training, mentoring and supporting farmers and field staff in sustainable practices to improve skills, yields, and adoption rates.
  • Collaborate with project teams and communities to align agroforestry interventions.
  • And any other duties assigned.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about agroecology, who thrives in hands-on environments and believes in empowering farmers as agents of change.

Requirements

We are looking for a dedicated and practical agronomic professional with a field-first mindset and strong communication skills. You enjoy working in rural contexts and know how to connect with farmers in an approachable and respectful way.

You bring:

  • Degree or diploma in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agricultural extension and rural development, or a related discipline
  • Field experience working with smallholder or rural farmers, ideally in developing or semi-rural contexts
  • Practical understanding of soil restoration, agroecological methods, and sustainable agriculture
  • Strong communication, training, and interpersonal skills
  • Proactive and self-reliant, comfortable working in rural and field-based environments
  • Bonus: familiarity with certification systems for sustainability, carbon, or biodiversity credits
  • Fluency in English and proficiency in at least one local language spoken in the project implementation areas, including Runyoro/Rutooro or Kiswahili.
  • You live in or near Hoima district or are willing to move. Remote work is in the bush, not at home.

You’re someone who learns by doing, communicates with empathy, and sees every farm visit as a chance to make a difference.

Benefits

Competitive Compensation & Growth

  • A competitive salary that reflects your field expertise and dedication
  • Opportunities to grow within a fast-moving international organization committed to long-term impact
  • Share in our collective success – all employees receive stock options in our publicly listed company (AEX: DGB)

Tangible Impact

  • Make a real difference – help smallholder farmers restore soil, increase yields, and protect biodiversity
  • See the results of your work in action – our projects are real, and you're encouraged to visit, engage, and contribute meaningfully on the ground

Field-Focused Flexibility

  • Work in a setting that values autonomy and trust – field-based, with support from a global team
  • Join a purpose-driven network of agronomists, conservationists, and local leaders working together to regenerate landscapes and support communities
